Hamilton County Economic Inclusion and Equity's Racial and Ethnic Dot Map

Hamilton County Economic Inclusion and Equity's Racial and Ethnic Dot Map showing dots representing the number of people in an area of each race

As part of the Economic Inclusion and Equity Department (EIED)'s ongoing efforts to equitably serve all communities within Hamilton County, EIED in partnership with Cincinnati Area Geographic Information System (CAGIS) have developed Hamilton County's census-driven Racial and Ethnic Dot Map.

Hamilton County's Racial and Ethnic Dot Map provides an accessible visualization of geographic distribution, population density, and the racial and ethnic diversity of Hamilton County. This equity tool enables us to better understand how to improve service effectiveness, outreach and engagement, and ensure programs and services are available to all segments of Hamilton County's diverse community.

Hamilton County's Racial and Ethnic Dot Map is inspired by the University of Virginia Weldon Cooper Center's Racial Dot Map, which was critical to promoting equity in communities across the U.S.

This Racial Equity Tool's Prior Impact in Hamilton County

Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District

Hamilton County's Soil and Water Conservation District has utilized the University of Virginia Weldon Cooper Center's Racial Dot Map in combination with a CAGIS map which tracked their services to evaluate how effectively the district was delivering services to the most vulnerable communities in Hamilton County. By overlaying maps of the district's services with the Weldon Cooper Center's Racial Dot Map, they were able to effectively evaluate how services were being delivered to marginalized communities in Hamilton County and develop future programming around meeting the needs of underserved communities.

Hamilton County Environmental Services

As part of Environmental Services' required five-year overhaul of the Solid Waste Management Plan, the department partnered with Rice Education Consulting (REdCon), a local MBE firm, to develop a DEI plan in addition to utilizing the Weldon Cooper Center's Racial Dot Map to ensure that they are serving all segments of Hamilton County. Using the Racial Dot Map informed their future strategic planning to ensure the department's Solid Waste Management Plan achieves state-mandated goals for recycling and waste reduction, including waste reduction programming targeted towards residents, communities, businesses and schools throughout Hamilton County.
